Over the past 6 seasons the Polar Bears have had 24 student athletes sign to play college football. As a team they have won 3 AA State Championships, 1 State Runner-up, 5 semi-final appearances and 3 Big Ten Conference Titles. In that time the Polar Bears have an overall record of 65-13, with a record of 39-5 on 12th Street and 17-3 in the Playoffs.
A 2003 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School. He was a 3-year letterman in football and basketball at FSHS. Coach Bartic also earned the title of Polar Bear Iron Man in 2003. Coach Bartic is a 2007 graduate of West Virginia University, where he also completed his master's degree in Secondary Education in 2010. He has taught Social Studies at FSHS since 2013. He has coached at FSHS for 17 seasons with ten of those as an assistant for multiple positions, mostly as Defensive Coordinator. Coach Bartic became the Head Coach of the Polar Bears in 2017. This is Coach Bartic's seventh season as Head Coach. Coach Bartic resides on West Side with his wife Hannah, their 2-year-old daughter Nora, and their chocolate lab Mojo.
A former Fairmont State University football player, where he started for 3 years at WR and graduated with a master's degree in education. He currently teaches Physical Education and Health at East Fairmont Middle School. Coach Sampson was brought on to the Polar Bear Football coaching staff in 2016. He lives with his wife Jodie, daughters Ivy and Isla, and dog Watson. He is the son of Mark and Lynn Sampson of Glen Dale, WV.
A 1996 graduate of FSHS. While at FSHS, he was selected for the WV All-State Football Team and Baseball Team. In 1996, Mainella was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. After his baseball career, he returned to play football at Fairmont State University. At FSU, Coach Mainella was a 4-year letterman and left FSU as the school's top kick and punt returner in school history. He graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After serving as the Assistant Football Coach for several years at FSHS, Coach Mainella became FSHS Offensive Coordinator from 2005 - 2009. Then he continued his coaching career at Fairmont State University in 2010 for 2-years. Coach Mainella returned to FSHS in 2013 to serve as the Offensive Coordinator. Coach Mainella is the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teacher at Fairmont Catholic School. He enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, Jules and loves to scuba dive in his free time.
A former FSHS football player from 1997 - 2001, where he was a 2-year Letterman. Coach Pethtel is a loving father, husband, and sports enthusiast. He is also a coach for the West Fairmont Colts Pee Wee Team. He enjoys hunting and spending time with his family and friends. Coach Pethtel began coaching the Polar Bears in 2013. He is employed by Soles Electric and lives in Monongah, WV with their son Jackson, and daughter Brynlynn.
A 1999 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School. While at Fairmont Senior, he received multiple accolades and all-state honors in Football, Baseball and Wrestling. In 1999, he was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the State of West Virginia. Nicholas received an Education degree from Fairmont State College and a master's degree in safety management from WVU. He has been on the football coaching staff since 2011 - achieving Class AA State Championships in 2018, 2020 and 2021. Nicholas has served as the Assistant Wrestling Coach for the Polar Bears since 2004.
A 1983 graduate of FSHS. He attended Fairmont State College and WVU earning a master's degree in special education. While at FSC, he was a four-year starter for baseball as catcher and designated hitter. His hitting career at FSC was .345. Donnie is a Social Studies teacher at Barnes Learning Center. Coach Retton assisted the Polar Bear Football Team from 2005-2010. He returned in 2013 to FSHS to help coach the kickers and holders. He had also been an Assistant Baseball Coach at FSHS for 18 years. Coach Retton currently resides in Fairmont.
Joins his 9th year with the Polar Bear Coaching Staff. He is a graduate of North Marion High School, where he was a standout athlete in football and wrestling. He earned All-State Defensive Lineman in 2011. He continued his football career at Fairmont State University, where he was awarded an athletic scholarship. Coach Phillips currently resides in Monongah, WV with his wife, Olivia, and daughters Camilla and Adrienne.
A 1997 graduate of Boonsboro High School in Maryland. Coach Bigelow was All-State in three sports while at Boonsboro High School. Following high school, he played football at Hargrave Military Academy and Fairmont State College, where he was a Team Captain. Coach Bigelow is a 2002 graduate of Fairmont State College with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. This will be Coach Bigelow's sixth season with the Polar Bears. He resides in Fairmont with his wife Natalie, their son Trevor and daughter Taylor.
A 1996 graduate of Westmar High School in Lonaconing, MD. He continued his football career at West Virginia University where he played various positions in his five (5) years. In 2001, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent and went on to make their 53-man roster. He also played with the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers during his time in the NFL. He finished his career in the Arena Football League, where he played one-year with the LA Avengers and then four (4) with the Philadelphia Soul - where he retired as an Arena Bowl Champion. He then moved back home to Keyser, WV with his wife, Alycia, and sons, Brady and Dylan. He became president of the Keyser Youth Football League and eventually the Tri-State Area Football League until he and his family moved to Fairmont in 2020.
A 1993 graduate of East Fairmont High School, where he was a 3-year letterman. Coach Arbogast is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he obtained his degree in Business Management. He started coaching football in 2012 with the East Fairmont Rockets, FOP and West Fairmont Middle School. He enjoys camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He's been employed by Novelis for the past 24 years. Coach Arbogast resides in Fairmont with his wife Sondra, their daughter Seneca and son Kaleb. Seneca is a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and currently attending WVU majoring in Chemistry. Kaleb is a Junior at FSHS and is a lineman on the Polar Bear Football Team.
